St Philip’s with St Stephen is a friendly congregation, who are proud of their history of social action and uplifting worship. The area is now one of the most desirable in Greater Manchester but in the past, has been one of the poorest communities in the country. The congregation includes locals new and old – and people from a wider area with connections to the church. St Philip’s worships in the Anglican tradition and is committed to being inclusive of everybody. The church school on Barrow St is an excellent primary school.

Concerts
Over the years we’ve had many concerts at St Phil’s by a wide range of artists. We have regular classical concerts, both lunchtime recitals and evening concert, we’ve had a live broadcast on Radio 3, members of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra often play, Jonathan Scott performs Organ recitals.
We have also had many contemporary musicians playing including The Sugababes, Laura Marling, Florence & the Machine, Bombay Bicycle Club, Cherry Ghost, The Walkmen, Dutch Uncles and many, many more. For coming events go to the Concerts page.

Brief history of the building
Designed by Sir Robert Smirke in 1825, the building’s Greek style is unique in Salford. The view of the church from chapel St is the most impressive, with its bow – fronted porch with ionic colonnade and ballustraded parapet and bell tower above. The main entrance is around the corner at the west end of the church. The spacious interior is well worth a visit.
The church became St Philip’s with St Stephen in 1962 when St Stephen’s church on St Stephen St closed and the congregations merged. The site of St Stephen’s church is still a small park between Trinity Way and St Stephens St.
